Brought over from Gumtree with my product manager to kick-start a redesign of the Motors.co.uk site

At the start of 2021, ebay Classifieds Group (ECG) placed greater emphasis on motors.co.uk and transferred some staff from Gumtree over to the sister company. My product manager Jennifer Rogers was one of these people and she requested that I be transferred with her.

Our focus for 2021 was to boost user replies and simplify the user's core journeys

I built new components that were run as A/B tests to assess their performance in improving the user journeys, many of which are still on the site today.

My 3 key contributions were:

  • Price Guidance Tool on a vehicle product page

    • Redesigning a price guidance tool that compares the prices of cars of a similar make and model and provides the user with a guide as to how expensive the vehicle is relative to other similar ones.
    • A/B test based upon the feature's location including tracking using an Intersection Observer to ensure we knew when the tool had been seen by the user. This was especially useful for tracking mobile sessions when the user needed to scroll down the vehicle product page to see the tool. The experiment had to take into affect the impact of this module on users sending messages to dealerships based upon the price guidance information as well as the impact of other products on the page such as car finance or insurance calculators.
    • Also utilised the Intersection Observer to only fire the data request as the user was about to scroll the tool into view. The data cost money to acquire on a per-request basis so this reduced the cost of having the tool on the page. Before my updates the tool had been hidden behind a Call To Action (CTA) button and only shown in a modal.
  • New search based upon body types on the homepage

    • Built a new search mechanism for users who don't know the make or model they desire but know the type of car they need (SUV, Hatchback, Estate etc).
    • A/B test with tracking to test whether this search method converted users to message dealerships more or less than user's that searched via the standard search panel.
  • Sticky navigation bars

    • Motors.co.uk had long used a fixed navigation bar on all pages but this was taking up a large amount of screen real estate.
    • My changes allowed the top navigation to scroll out of the view while other more contextual information remained in the viewport.
    • Run as an A/B experiment to determine if the added screen real estate for content generated more messages to car dealerships.
